January 2nd is National Science Fiction Day! To celebrate, I have put together a list of twelve of my favorite sci-fi reads.
12 Of My Favorite Science Fiction Reads
Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
This will always be one of my favorite classics.
The Fireman by Joe Hill
The idea of the Dragonscale (and later learning how it travels to infect the hosts) absolutely fascinated me. The writing style was fantastic. Many times throughout the story (and right up until the very end!) I felt myself getting wicked anxious. No matter what was going on, I needed to read on to see what happened next.
The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams
I LOVED this book! The characters were wonderful, the storyline was interesting, and the casual interruption to have the Hitchhikers Guide narrate to teach you more about the galaxy was perfect.
The Limpet Syndrome by Tony Moyle
The author told me that, “The Limpet Syndrome doesn’t really have a natural ‘wheelhouse’ but sits in everyone’s ‘odd space’ that most of us have!” And I 100% agree. I would very highly recommend this book to those that don’t mind reads that are a bit strange!
The Martian by Andy Weir
This book was incredible! If I were asked to describe the book, I would just say that it had a Michael Crichton storyline, a dash of Stephen King suspense, and a ton of sarcasm and humor. So clearly this book was 100% in my wheelhouse!
The Pink Heist by Adam El Shalakany
Prey by Michael Crichton
This book was required reading in one of my high school classes. It was the first Crichton book I read, and it started my obsession with his work.
Ready Player One by Ernest Cline
This book was fantastic! I was immediately hooked and had a very hard time putting it down. This CNN review nails it: “An addictive read…part intergalactic scavenger hunt, part romance and all heart.” —CNN.com
Sapient by Jerry Kaczmarowski
There is just something so intriguing to me about medical thrillers! I had so much fun reading this book! Right from page one I was drawn in and couldn’t wait to see what happened next.
Under the Dome by Stephen King
LOVE THIS BOOK. Unfortunately I saw the movie before reading the book…so I knew how it was going to end. But I was still hanging off every word! I had such a hard time putting the book down. It was an absolutely amazing read. I love R’s character!!
Thanks for reading!
What is your favorite sci-fi novel?
Angela Lawrence says
Great list! I enjoyed Under The Dome (and was kind of disappointed with the tv series!). The Martian is amazing, too! Ready Player One and Warm Bodies are on my TBR! We just saw a trailer for Ready Player One, and now my husband is excited to see it.
Erica Hatch says
Thank you! Yeah the TV series was a bit dull, I still watched all of the episodes I could get my hands on though haha! I hope you enjoy Ready Player One and Warm bodies when you get the chance to read them!

An oldie but a goodie — I love FRANKENSTEIN. The first time I read it I was struck by how it was nothing like we think based on popular culture. It's a great novel with deep themes and not a monster horror at all. And I consider it sci-fi since we still can't reassemble a human and bring them to life.
Erica Robyn says
I need to re-read that one soon! I snagged a gorgeous copy at Walmart this fall! 🙂

The Dispossessed by Ursula K. LeGuin. I love her writing and her way of thinking.
Erica Robyn says
Ooh! I will check that out! Thanks Lory!

Definitely time to reread The Dispossessed. We just lost UKL on Mon, 01/22.

Great list. I enjoyed Under the Dome except for the ending. I was not pleased with that. I still need to read Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Maybe someday. Hopefully my Swords and Stars Challenge will encourage me to read more of this genre in 2018.
Erica Hatch says
😀 Good luck with your challenge! I can't wait to see what books you pick!

I am always on the lookout for Science Fiction recommendations! So, thank you. The Hitchhiker's books are such fun, aren't they? I loved Ready Player One and enjoyed The Fireman. I have The Martian and Warm Bodies in my TBR pile to read. Great list, Erica!
Erica Hatch says
Happy to help! I hope you love The Martian and Warm Bodies as much as I did! 🙂

Thank you for sharing. I've been trying to read more Science Fiction (I need to diverse my readings), so, I'm adding some of these titles to my reading list – I already have Vicious on my list.
Happy readings! 😉

Wahoo! Enjoy!! 🙂

Hi Erica! So many great choices here! Never read The Fireman – didn't sound like SF to me at all. Will have to look into it now! 😉
Erica Hatch says
😀 I hope you love it as much as I did! Some of it is a bit slow, but I cruised right through it!
Heather Cilley says
I still really need to read Hitchhiker's Guide! Hopefully this year! I am not too experiences with Science Fiction so I hope it's a good way to slowly introduce me to the genre! Awesome list E!

I've heard fantastic things about Under the Dome – maybe it's about time I picked it up. I'm also really intrigued by The Limpet Syndrome and The Pink Heist -I've never heard of either, but they both sound bizarre and hilarious.
Erica Hatch says
Definitely!! I highly recommend all three. The Limpet Syndrome and The Pink Heist are a hoot!! Under the Dome seems to be hit or miss with my reading buddies, but I'd obviously recommend it since it made my list! 🙂
Andrew Sherman says
Have you read “The Forever War” by Joel Haldeman? It’s an older book (1974) but it is crazy accurate with the tech they use. Highly recommended.
Erica Hatch says
Ooh! I'll add it to my TBR right now! Thanks Andy!
Olivia-Savannah says
I actually have Farenheit 451 and Ready Player One and just haven't had the chance to read them yet! The Martian and Warm Bodies are also on my TBR.
Erica Robyn says
I hope you love all of them as much as I did! 🙂

I apparently need to read more science fiction because I've only read two books on your list. I love Farenheit 451. It's one of my favorite classics. Vicious has been on my shelf for over a year. It's time I read it.
Erica Hatch says
Oh my gosh, I think you would absolutely LOVE Vicious!
Greg says
I started the Hitchhiker's Guide once but never finished it- just got sidetracked. I should revisit it this year, I'd like to read the whole series. I feel like I don't read enough humorous SF!
