The Graveyard Book is one of my favorite stories. The first time I experienced it was when I grabbed the audiobook from my local library. I was a bit nervous when I saw that it was labeled “Children’s Audio Book.” But when I hit play, the opening totally caught me off guard. I had to pause and look back at the CD case. I still cannot believe that this was labeled for children! Needless to say, I was hooked right from the start.
So of course, when I saw that there was a graphic novel version, I had to get my hands on it right away!
My Thoughts on The Graveyard Book Graphic Novel Vol 1 by Neil Gaiman –
This was an excellent graphic novel adaptation! The storyline of the book was captured so wonderfully. I love that there are two volumes, so the whole story was able to be told without feeling rushed. This volume covered the first half of the book, up to the Macabray dance.
I thought that the artwork in chapter one was absolutely perfect! Kevin Nowlan really captured the tone of the story.
Here are two of my favorite panels by Kevin Nowlan:
However, I was not a fan of how each chapter was illustrated by a different artist. For example, just check out the various versions of Silas below. The top left is by Kevin Nowlan (my favorite), top right is P. Craig Russell, lower left is Tony Harris/Scott Hampton, and the lower right is Galen Showman. Sure, each version is interesting in its own way. But for this book, I would have definitely preferred it to be consistent.
My Final Thoughts on The Graveyard Book Graphic Novel Vol 1 –
Overall, a very fun read! I would recommend this to anyone, regardless if you have read the full book yet or not. Personally, I would have given this volume a full 5 stars if it wasn’t for the varying artist styles… but I ended up giving it 4 stars.
One more creepy panel that I enjoyed immensely (by Tony Harris/Scott Hampton):
Thanks for reading!
What are your thoughts on graphic novels that use different artists for each chapter? Love them? Hate them? Indifferent? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments section below.

It's INCREDIBLE!!! I highly recommend it! Just a heads up, there are two volumes. I would definitely buy/borrow both at once because you'll want to read them back to back! 🙂
