Talking to Michael Clark is always such a treat! He is truly one of my favorite people in the horror community and when the gents let me know he was going to be on the show, I couldn’t wait!
On this episode, we chat all about his latest book, Hell On High, his love for Brazil, and many real-world horrors. We also cover frozen swordfish, missing thyroids and cut throats, and survival documentaries. This is yet another episode filled with laughter, friendship, a bit of dark humor, and a lot of great discussion!
Let’s dive in!

Just a quick note, it’s important to know how close we all are after four years! There are some jokes that you’ve just gotta see our faces! I was seriously laughing or smiling this entire recording to the point where my cheeks started cramping up toward the end!
While recording, I first got to ask Mike about his writing process and what he did to include all of the horrors from the little things like bugs to the big terrors like climbing the mountain or running from people with guns. His answer here was absolutely wonderful! I loved that he discussed really making readers feel what he’s feeling while he’s writing and putting fear down on the page.
Next up, I got to ask if there’s another sub-genre that he has his eye on next. His answer here … I already can’t wait! I’ll be here for anything Mike writes, but this one especially sounds amazing!
Other things we got to chat about included:
- The idea that kick-started Hell on High,
- Michael using Patrick Brennan as a name for his slimy character,
- Michael’s connection and love for Brazil,
- Putting fear on the page,
- Why variety is important,
- Getting started with writing no matter what age you are,
- And so much more!
We also discussed a list of films that are must-watch for people who need more survival stories, including:
- Summit Fever – Thriller film
- Free Solo – Documentary
- The Dawn Wall – Documentary
- Touching the Void – Documentary
While this stuff may terrify me, you bet I’m going to watch each of these!
Toward the end of the episode, I got to rave a bit about Neverest by T.L Bodine, another amazing Everest tale! Shane also gives me some wonderful compliments that made me go into embarrassed/panic mode. One day I will learn to take a compliment appropriately! (Thank you again, Shane! You’re too kind!) And then Pat and Mike both go into protective mode over me which made me laugh really hard, but also made me smile and appreciate these two even more!
This entire chat was so much fun. I can’t wait for you all to listen in!
And one last note, here’s my proof of my Michael Clark shelf as mentioned on the show:
