Ha! All joking aside…

In honor of A Series of Unfortunate Events being released on Netflix tomorrow, I wanted to create a fun little book tag! This tag has thirteen prompts, but they don’t necessarily represent each of the thirteen books. Instead, I tried to create fun prompts based on themes, characters, and other elements of the book series.

If you are reading this, I challenge you to complete the tag!

1- The Bad Beginning- Name a book or a series that you had trouble getting into, but ended up loving.


William Shakespeare’s The Phantom of Menace by Ian Doescher

It took me a couple of pages to get into the swing of the Shakespearean work. But once I caught the rhythm, I couldn’t stop reading this book!

2- The Fire- Name a book that you wouldn’t rush to douse with water if it happened to catch fire. 

Emma by Jane Austen

I know this is a classic… But unfortunately, Jane Austen’s style is just not a style for me. I feel like this book may always be labeled as the worst book I have ever read.

3- The Orphans- Name a book duology, trilogy, or series that you wish had been a stand-alone book. 

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

This one may seem like a bit of a stretch. But I just wish everything about Go Set A Watchman hadn’t happened. I mean, just the fact that this book was even published is still a bit sketchy to me…

4- Mischievous Schemes- Name a character (or characters) that always seemed to be up to something. 

Fred and George Weasley from the Harry Potter series

The princes of mischief and schemes! I would very happily read an entire book series based solely on their lives.

5- The Eye- Name a book scheduled to be released in 2017 that you’ve had your eye on. 

Fever Dream by Samanta Schweblin, Megan McDowell 

I first heard about this book from Liberty on All The Books and I was immediately interested. This book came out just two days ago (January 10, 2017) and  I am very impatiently waiting for it to be available at my local library!

6- Disguises- Name a book that you read and loved but would never have picked up if you had judged the book by its cover. 

One for the Money by Janet Ivanovich 

I finally read this book after my mom had pushed me to read it over a dozen times. I was so hesitant at first because the cover was so bland. I mean, it’s all text formatted in these big letters with the most random color combination. When I started reading though, I was hooked. I can’t remember where I stopped in the series, but I would definitely love to reread from the beginning sometime soon!

7- The Villain- Who is your favorite book villain? 

Negan from The Walking Dead

I both love and hate this man. I am very interested to see where the TV show takes things with him.

8- Letters- If you could write a letter to tell your past self to read a certain book, what book would that be and why? 

Everybody Writes: Your Go-To Guide to Creating Ridiculously Good Content
by Ann Handley 

Dear past self, this book is going to be really helpful with your career. I know college is tough and you don’t have much time to read, but trust me- you need to make the time for this one.

9- Clever Inventions- Name an invention from a book that you wish was real. 

Babel Fish from Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy

These fish, when inserted into your ear, allows you to instantly understand any language that is being spoken to you. I just think that this would be so interesting!

10- Mob Mentality- Name a book that you read based solely on the recommendation of others but didn’t enjoy.
 
The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead 

I was seeing this book absolutely everywhere this year! All my bookish podcasts were talking about it, it was all over social media, and it was front and center in every single bookstore I visited. I finally requested it from my local library and waited months for it to be available. However, I certainly do not think that it lived up to all of the hype. This book did not hold my interest at all. I thought that the organization of the storyline was very odd and jumpy. And I didn’t enjoy any of the characters at all.

11- The V. F. D.- Name a book or a series you’ve read that is about a secret society. 

Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children Series by Ransom Riggs

Of course, if you have read this series, you know that the peculiar children live in loops in order to keep both themselves and their secrets safe.

12- The Sugar Bowl- Name a book that you used to own, but can no longer find. 

For this one, I unfortunately do not have a title because I let a friend borrow the book and it never made its way back to me. It’s a book that I read for my theology class that was about a woman who lived in a city and had a very strange relationship with her church. The cover may have had a window or a church sign on it…but I’m not sure. It’s really driving me crazy though! I know that is incredibly vague… I loved this book so much. I had it marked with dozens of sticky notes to point out my favorites lines and passages. I really wish I could remember the title, or at least more about the story, so I could buy another copy and reread it.

13- Unhappy Endings- What book or book series did you feel ended badly or in a way that you did not like? (NO SPOILERS!)

The Walls Around Us by Nova Ren Suma

When I finished and closed this book, I said out loud; “Are you kidding me?!” and I was not asking that in a good way.
