My Thoughts on The Covenant: A Tale of the Antichrist by Tom Lewis –
After an event from her childhood leaves her desperate to find answers, Kenzie is determined to go to great lengths to try to prevent the unthinkable from happening.
Acheron, a city that was so dark and cursed that it sank into the ground, maybe arising from the depths once again to spread its darkness.
Odd things have always happened in Capetown, Maine, and Kenzie knows that they are covered up and quickly brushed aside. But after the death of her brother, this young woman isn’t letting the town off the hook so easily this time. She’s determined to find out more about Acheron and warn others of what’s to come before it’s too late.
This tale covers so much ground! From Kenzie’s terribly abusive childhood to putting her at the forefront of the encroaching evil, readers will love following her as her strength powers her through.
I enjoyed being able to just sit back and read the tale as it was presented, not overthinking anything that had happened or trying to guess what was to come. The author outlines everything so wonderfully, that you’ll catch yourself completely immersed in something and only realize we had taken a tangent when we jump back to Kenzie! This was the case for me numerous times, but especially when we were presented with research, a journal, or an additional character.
At each turn, I was so nervous to see what darkness would come next.
My Favorite Passages from The Covenant: A Tale of the Antichrist –
A fierce storm pounded the coast that night, sending waves crashing high against the jagged rocks of a long stone jetty. At its far end stood an aging lighthouse, its powerful beam scattered in the storm’s gusts.
Kenzie hated that forest, and especially at night. Ever since her parents’ mysterious deaths, she had grown increasingly convinced that things were out there that defied explanation. Things beyond our normal experiences. Things that prowled the dark corners of our reality. And what better place for them to hide than the forest.
But that night, nothing in that dark forest was as scary as the nightmare they just left.
Sounds arose from the forest on either side of them, beginning in hushed whispers and rising in volume to a crescendo of inarticulate horror. It was as if the sounds came from the trees and plants or the air itself, filling the forest in a dense cacophony of eerie, unintelligible utterances.
The problem was, as Kenzie saw it, nothing stayed buried in Capetown. Literally and figuratively. Things crawled from Capetown’s unhallowed graves in the dead of night, posing the same threat now as they did centuries ago.
Something was there with her. Something as cold and black as the surrounding darkness. She tensed, holding her breath as she listened in that dreadful silence.
It was moving, making no more noise than a thought as it glided through the darkness.
They caught only faint, fleeting glimpses of the dark, hulking outlines as the wolves circled and closed in. Rick fired two more shots, but it was like shooting smoke, the wolves fading into the fog as quickly as they appeared.
My Final Thoughts on The Covenant: A Tale of the Antichrist –
What a journey this was! The book’s first half is bleak and distressing, but it lays the dark groundwork perfectly for the action and terror that is to come.
And good news for other readers who enjoy this tale; a follow-up is on its way!
